What is a swamp?
A swamp is an area of land permanently covered or filled with water. They are transition zones that are not entirely land or water.

| Formed around slow-moving fresh water such as lakes, rivers and streams. | Found along coastlines where saltwater from the ocean meets land, also known as mangrove swamps. |
Importance of swamps

Swamps are important to ecosystems as they play an important role in both the environment and our daily lives. They support a rich variety of plants and animals, help purify water by filtering out pollutants and absorb excess rainwater to prevent flooding.
Swamps also store large amounts of carbon, making them key in the fight against climate change. In coastal areas, mangrove swamps protect shorelines from erosion. Beyond their ecological value, swamps provide food, materials and recreational opportunities for many communities.
Swamp ecosystems
A swamp ecosystem are wetlands where water covers the land creating the perfect environment for water-tolerant plants and a wide variety of animals. These ecosystems are usually filled with trees like mangroves, cypress and plants that thrive in wet, muddy soil.
Swamps host intricate food chains that involve insects, fish, amphibians, birds, and reptiles such as snakes and caimans. The decomposition of plant matter enriches the soil with nutrients, promoting the growth of new plants and supporting the overall ecosystem. Swamps rank among the most productive ecosystems globally, playing a vital role in preserving biodiversity, purifying water, and storing carbon.

Conservation
Conserving these ecosystems is essential as they play an important role in preventing flooding and reducing the impacts of climate change. Additionally, conservation efforts aid in the protection of wildlife, regulation of climate and provision of essential resources for future generations.

Fun Fact
Some swampy areas have bioluminescent fungi that light up the dark.
